Color Me Rad – Different version of Holi and way to have fun and be healthy

I did it. Yay…it was one of the best weekend ever really even though I was sick. As I had so much fun and I think I overdid myself so I couldn’t recover from the cold and infection I had but I don’t really regret it. I had my  first race. Although it was a baby run of 5 KM only but it was my first step to any sort of race I would say as I have never run in any race in my life. I wanted to do a half marathan last year but never trained myself for that. But this time it was so much fun with colors and water everywhere. If you have done Colormerad before than you would know what is it all about as it is being held in various parts of the world.

I was there on time (an hour early to register and get my package after online booking). It was a long way away (2.5 hours) to get to the venue. I should have checked the place before signing up – I was told this by my friends which was a good advice. But I could not do the other colour run as I was going to Antarctica that time so this was an awesome opportunity for me to see how I go with running before my next challenge – Spartan (an obstacle course run). Even though it was no where near difficulty wise to Spartan but still it boosted my confidence for my next event for sure and that was enough for me to get going specially when I wasn’t very well for last two days anyways so I think I did ok to run 5 KM in 40 minutes I suppose as we were slowing down at water stations where they were throwing water at you and more so at the colour stations where you had to make sure you don’t open your mouth and also protect your eyes to be able to continue on the race track without any stress.

I hadn’t had so much fun for quiet a long time. There were so many kids in this event as many families were participating. Friends had come in their groups and I was missing mine as my friends were going out of town so they couldn’t be here with me. But the whole atmosphere was just amazing with music, colours, water, smiles and excitement. Before the actual race there was a zumba dance as well that lot of people followed. I couldn’t be a part of it as I took the public transport and I was trying to arrange some place to keep my backpack that I had brought with me with food and spare clothes as there was no bag drop (only issue with this event I felt). But finally I decided to run with my bag when I couldn’t find any solution to this. I was on the first of the three waves (starting 9 , 9:30 and 9:45 AM). And being alone I also managed to get in the front line. And then it started with so many people running towards the first water station and then I realized that it is my first run ever as some of the guys started to take over. And soon I knew that I have to keep up with them not to fall far behind with the rest of the people.  So I think I did good as I was at the finish line in 40 minutes or less. Even though it was a fun run with not much longer distance but it was good enough to boost my motivation for longer runs and to train harder.  Also I have attached pictures from the event. We had an awesome party with music, more colours and lots of dancing afterwards and around 12:30 I had arrived home after an eventful morning can you imagine. What a awesome way to start Sunday. You would hear a lot more about my upcoming challenges now as this year is going to be the other way around. I don’t have a bucket list but I would have things that I would add to it as I go once I do them and believe me this would be better than ever. As there wouldn’t be a pressure of completing things on the list but there would be joy to share the things I have done and the motivation and spontaneous act of doing things as they come. For example I just became a Guinness world record holder that I would share with you soon with some interesting story behind it.

Workout makes you feel tired? What to eat pre-workout, post-workout and during the workout

Most of you would know and if don’t then I am a part time personal trainer as well. And I keep getting questions around health and nutritions. So here is some information that I have compiled for about what you can eat or drink before, during and after your workout. Hope this is useful.

This is my favourite sweet (fruit crumble with ice cream) just for the weekend 🙂

Imp: Exercising in a fasted state (8 hours since the last meal) results in a greater proportion of fat being used as the exercise fuel compared to doing the same workload after a carbohydrate-containing meal or snack.

The following foods are suitable to eat 3-4 hours before exercise: The following snacks are suitable to eat 1-2 hours before exercise:

 Tip:

  • A general guide is to have a meal about 3-4 hours before exercise or a lighter snack about 1-2 hours before exercise. You need to experiment to find the timing, amount and make up that best suits your individual needs.
  • If you need to eat close to exercise, opt for a snack that provides at least 70 g of carbohydrate.  There is some evidence to suggest that small amounts of carbohydrate (<50 g) are more likely to cause problems in sensitive individuals than larger amounts.  This is probably because the small intake of carbohydrate is swamped by the carbohydrate use.  Larger intakes will compensate for a greater rate of use, leaving the athlete with a net gain in available carbohydrate.

 Drinks:

  • During Workout
Unless you are running hard for extending periods of time, gatorade is completely unnecessary and can actually hamper your workouts. Stick with water, about 6-8 ounces every 30 minutes.
  • Post-Workout
Within 10 minutes of finishing your workout, you should again be having some form of complex carb or carb shake. Don’t miss this window.
  • After 1 hour
Lean meat or fish with light veggie and more water.

Time Travel to be ChildLike

Time Travel to be ChildLike again

I was walking back home from work today. It was such a beautiful day. Cool breeze made me feel calm and very relaxed. I felt so much energy even though the day had been really long at work. I felt the air I was breathing, I saw people walking on the footpath, I saw the beautiful buildings made by man, I saw couples holding hands with the ray of hope in their eyes, I crossed a park with a small lake where lots of birds were chirping, I saw the diners enjoying their meal in relaxed environment and I also saw a girl running and looking a bit scared, then I saw a guy holding a map who was trying to figure out the directions and so on. What was the difference – I was living in the moment. I was living the present and cherishing it completely. I did not think about the past and I was not lost in the dreams of future. I was aware of every moment I lived today evening.

And what was the result – I was smiling as my heart was full of joy, joy of life, joy of sharing my life with so many other fortunate people, joy of being able to feel things and joy of being able to love everyone in my life. I must have looked ridiculous as I was smiling at my own on the way back home. But it was hard to contain that joy in me and make a poker face. Happiness was all over my face. I felt like dancing all the time and I felt so light that I felt I could run faster than time. It was the evening I think I have not experienced in ages or perhaps never before. It was the evening of utter exuberance. It was as if I had nothing to worry about in the world. And how did it happen.

For that we need to become like a child and free ourselves from everything but the joy of life. Every breathe we take is the blessings and is full of life. We have the gift to feel the very air we breathe, the water we drink and the land we walk upon. To be able to enjoy again we might have to look back and remember how we used to behave as a child. We need to learn from children. We need to start observing nature. Is there anyone out there who did not enjoy running in the part as a child? Is there anyone who actually liked the Air-con more than natural cool breeze when growing up, of course depending upon the temperature it might be a differnt case? Who didn’t like to play with water and get dirty in sand/soil, if given a chance?

That is because we are born with natural instinct and we lose them as we grow up or I would say stop listening to our inner self. To learn the truth and be happy again forever we need to go back to the roots and re-activate those functions we are born with. The powers that we have as humans, we need to find it again and use that energy to make our life fulfilled. In some countries/ cultures people say that children are the purest form of God. Why because they are more like God I think because they are free spirit, with no fear, happy, sensitive to others, friendly and open. As we grow, we suppress most of these qualities and the sufferings starts from there.

I am going to start that inner child in me and nurture it again, as I might be lost so far but not anymore.
